CBD aka Cannabidiol, is the most popular, legal cannabinoid, currently in the cannabinoid industry. Much like THC, CBD is derived from cannabis, but has different effects, uses, and legal considerations that govern its use, which we will look at here.

So, what is CBD? CBD is the term for a family of chemical compounds that are found in cannabis plants. These compounds, much like all derivatives from cannabis, interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Thought all cannabinoids share chemical similarities, the specific chemical structure of each gives them unique profiles of pharmacological effects.

Is it Natural or Synthetic?

CBD is a natural occurring cannabinoid produced by cannabis plants, often referred to as a phytocannabinoid. And though hearing that CBD can be made in a laboratory, it is critical to remember that there is no chemical difference between CBD extracted from plants and CBD created in labs. The molecule of CBD is naturally occurring.

How is it Made and is it Legal?

Though it can be created in labs as previously mentioned, most manufacturers extract CBD directly from cannabis plants, using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. CO2 extraction is a common technique used to extract essential oils from plants. The main plant they use to extract from is hemp plants and that is for legal reasons.

Speaking of legal reason, CBD is legal at the federal level in the United States! However, most states have their own policies in regard to CBD, so it is highly recommended to check with your state legislature for details about your local CBD laws.
